Leeza Browne (00:00:38) - Hello amazing humans, and welcome back to the Everything Early Childhood podcast. My name is Leeza Browne from Platinum Education Group, and I am so privileged and honoured to come to you each and every week to share some insights, stories and just real human experiences from the early childhood sector. Um, so first of all, I just wanted to give you a beautiful, big, warm welcome. Happy 2024. It feels like so long, I actually almost forgot how to how to do this podcast thing. Because it feels like so long since we recorded our last episode, and I had intended to. I've been watching The Crown and, you know, does anyone else feel like, like, over the Christmas sort of break? Um, where there's nothing on TV? It's so painful.
Leeza Browne (00:01:59) - Um, and I hate that the shows go on break. But just like us, everyone needs to recharge their batteries and have a rest. I have to keep reminding myself. But, um, when all the shows go on break, it's really annoying because there's nothing to watch on TV. I've been getting into the Crown and it's so slow and it's so I don't know, is it boring? I don't know, but, rather than watching, I just watch one episode and sometimes before bed, and it's really hard sometimes even to get through one complete episode. But I appreciate that it actually puts me to sleep. But as it as it's going on, I've only got one episode left, so I'm sad I have to find something else to watch. Um, before I sleep. To just calm my mind, reset. Um, just to zone out for a little bit. My mum always had a saying that instead of having drama in your life, everyone needs a certain amount.
Leeza Browne (00:02:54) - So rather than having things happen in your own life, find drama in TV. I guess that's what I do find little things that have little drama, um, on TV and live through those. So this week Below Deck came back, um, so really excited that I get my weekly dose of Below Deck back. Um, but yeah, I've got one episode of The Crown to watch. But reason I was going to say that is because at the end of last year, I was inspired by the Queen and her end of year announcement, and I was going to do that last year. But we were. So usually we get a bit of downtime at the end of the year, but we have just been jam packed supporting all of you amazing humans, um, all across Australia. So we, um, didn't even get a chance to record an episode. So we're back. We're back. Um, this year I am setting my intention to be can take consistent action. So that's my word for the year.
Leeza Browne (00:03:53) - Um, usually just one, but, um. And it was. What was it? I do have another word. And I thought, no, no, it's not fitting. Um, so it was action. Like taking action last year was connection for me, which was really beautiful. And I loved connecting with everyone, and I do. I love hearing people's stories, seeing where they're at, helping them through challenges that they're having and that they're facing. And it's always helpful to learn from somebody else that's been through those experiences, um, so that you can hear from them, any strategies that they may have tried or even just the understanding of what you're going through. Like there is no feeling. And if you heard my episode, actually it wasn't an episode on here. It was one I recorded for somebody else. But it was a little bit about my journey. And with my journey through schooling and growing up, I felt really quite misunderstood. So my journey in my life mission is that no one should go through anything alone.
Leeza Browne (00:04:56) - And then I want people to feel really supported, um, going through whatever experience they're going through in, in their life. So I'm really excited for 2024. I do a goal setting, um, set an intention. Um, we talk a lot about setting a word or having a word and all that is, is just what our intention is and what we want to focus on for that year. And in your services, um, we talk about three things. So three priorities that you want to achieve this year. So big goals that tie in with your ship and um, for your improvements. So in 2024 we've obviously got all of our existing amazing services still happening. So visiting services um, got lots of training and professional development booked in. So I'll be traveling all over the east coast of Australia in this first quarter or before March. Um, so who knows where I'll be coming, um, to you each week. But, um, consistent action is my word for this year. So whilst I'm generally I always take action and I'm always obviously moving forward and growing, but what I was finding for me is that I struggle with things it takes.
Leeza Browne (00:06:10) - Take a long time. So things that are that like slow burn, that marathon that you have to consistently put action into. So I was I'm the kind of person that, um, naturally will just stay up all night, every night for a whole week just to get it done. Because I love finishing things. I love achieving things. But I've got some things on my list this year that aren't going to be able to be completed that way. And they're things that have been on my mind for, you know, 2 to 3 years that I've been wanting to achieve. And I realized that in order for me to achieve them in for my growth, I needed to focus on that consistent action, which was taking small steps every single day to get towards that bigger action and bigger goal. So I'm writing my book this year. I've started this week, um, 2000 words a day. Um, so feel free to tune me on and and check in with me and hold me accountable for doing my 2000 words a day, and I'll share with you little things.
Leeza Browne (00:07:12) - So, like this week, I didn't actually have any time yesterday, for example, to do my 2000 words, but in the car on my drive I dictated them. So I talked them out, um, and it transcribed them as I was driving. So I'm looking for different strategies and I'll do that again today. So my health and my fitness, um, are really in the forefront this year. I've given myself time and permission to be able to, um, you know, spend money on my health because I realized that, I mean, Jake told me it sounds quite depressing, but I realized that at some point in my life, if I didn't make changes, that I would have to spend money on my health. So wouldn't it make sense to spend that money now on my health? Um, so that it doesn't get to that point? Like be proactive with being healthy and fit rather than obviously down the track having to spend that money on health anyway for things that are obviously for negative, um, reasons.
Leeza Browne (00:08:14) - So really, um, allowing myself and giving myself permission to do that. So I've got a personal trainer, um, who's joining my team and, um, we're doing two sessions per week. So I've been interviewing, um, personal trainers. So that's been interesting. And, um, yeah, found a really fantastic one to, um, start our regular sessions. And so really ask yourself, what is it that you need? Where is it that you want to grow and what intention do you want to set for yourself this year so it can take you to the next level? What I realized in a lot of my mentors and, um, business coaches, they have been like, I've like, I've been hearing it on broken record. And I know this time of the year for everyone is, you know, it's generally about focusing on health and focusing on different things, but we tend to put a lot of energy. And I know myself, a lot of my energy goes into helping and supporting other people to be the best that they can be.
Leeza Browne (00:09:16) - And what happens generally is that we put ourselves last and we put ourselves, um, you know, at the bottom of the barrel, in the bottom of the basket, but in order and I always remind myself and it's like, okay, Lisa, time to practice what you preach, girl. Um, is that you need to put yourself first. You need to put yourself first. You need to consider. And the more you do for your health and your fitness, the better you will become. And because you become better, your business also becomes better as well. So everything is a flow on effect, and it's like I've been hearing that message on repeat, repeat, repeat. Every podcast, every book, every, um, video that's just popping up on my feed right now, um, is all about health, well-being, fitness because it is true at the end of the day, and I preach this over and over again all the time to be if you need to be at your best and put yourself first, fill up your cup before you can give to others.
Leeza Browne (00:10:18) - If we do it in the opposite order, we end up with nothing left to give. So how do you need? What do you need to do in 2024? What do you need to change in your routine in order to get out the maximum effort for you to feel good? Wake up excited every day. Um, to be able to go and make all of our beautiful changes that we do. So we've got some beautiful new things coming in 2024. So really, I'm pumped and excited to work with you all over a longer term, a longer term basis. So we're launching our Directors Academy this year. So starting our first submission in March. And what that will look like is it'll be six months working together. We'll focus on a different module, different topic each month. And what we're going to do is show you how to do your role. So what we've finding is that there's a lot of directors or non. Supervisors drowning, doing the best that they can and the best that they know.
Leeza Browne (00:11:15) - With the knowledge that they have. And I remember being in that position myself, starting as a director. I'm like, what do I even do? And I did the best I could, made my checklists, went through it and did. But the question was always still in my mind, am I doing enough? Is there an easier way? Is there a better way? Um, why like and just starting something like, should I be doing this? So too much, not enough. What is it that I should be doing and what how should I focus my time? And so what we're doing is I'm. We've designed this workshop to work personally with me for six months and have that support for six months work through each module. So there will be an online module every month. There will be a full day class workshop that we'll do every one per month based on that module to get you started. And then we'll provide you with all of the resources, um, in the online portal that you'll get in order to set you up for success, and also not only to set you up for success and your mindset and get you strong in doing your role, but also to build your knowledge around how to do your role.
Leeza Browne (00:12:24) - Like what is it that you should be doing? And so we'll take you through step by step. So your ship setting goals, um, your mission, your vision will take you through, um, policies, your role. What is the compliance involved in your role. So if you want more information about that, really looking forward to working with a small group. Um, it will be groups. So each month we will also have weekly Q&A sessions that you can log into to ask questions, and I'll be available there to help you with what is going on in your service. So reach out, get in touch and we can send you the information on that. Um, we only are taking ten people maximum to join us because I want it to be a really small, intimate group and selfishly, I want to be part of your journey. I want to see you grow. So just like being a teacher and seeing the amazing like, the reason I'm a teacher is to see the light in those children's eyes when they learn something for the first time.
Leeza Browne (00:13:24) - I want to be a part of your journey and see that light in your eyes. Um, when you realize how easy and simple it can be. Because in early childhood, what happens is we weren't trained to run a business. We weren't trained to, um, be able to know what the role of a director or business leader is. And we also, um, there was no training in what that look like or how to do that role. So I want to set you up for success in 2024. So if you want to join me from March this year, get in touch and I look forward to chatting soon. So with today's episode, I wanted to move into talking about this year. I wanted to give you a little bit of a pep talk. Um, I've just found this new app. Love it so much. I found that I was a bit zen like I've been. I do a meditation every day, which you trust. I'm not complaining about feeling Zen every day, but, um, it's so inside timer is the meditation app, and you can find different meditations for different purposes depending on where you're at and what you're currently doing.
Leeza Browne (00:14:31) - But I found this other app. It's called Pep Talk and I love it. Love it so much. It's like, you know, when you get up in the day and you're like, you know what? I just need a pep talk. So you log into the app and you choose the what you need the pep talk for, and, um, it's great. Pumps you up. You got that? Yeah, a little bit of a pep talk. So some people are like really heightened. So they need to be calmed down. And meditations are really beautiful for that. But when you come, um, and you're too calm, you need that pep up if you need, like, you can do this and I find training. So job. I've been doing lots of dancing, um, and exercise videos which I've shared previously. And her language and what she talks about as she trains is just beautiful. Like, you've got this. The more you move, the better you feel. And it starts to ingrain that language.
Leeza Browne (00:15:19) - And it reminded me of how important, um, we know how important language is because the language we use with children becomes that inner voice. And it's really important to frame things from a positive perspective. In fact, I'll do another episode on language. However, what sometimes what we don't realize is how important it is for the language that we use with our teams. So this year, I want you to be really deliberate and purposeful with the language that you choose to use with your teams, particularly at this time of the year. So this episode has been inspired by people that I have been mentoring, supporting, helping and visiting. Already this year I'm seeing, um, two kinds. People, and we'll always have two kinds of people, and it doesn't matter what kind of person you are. It depends what season that you are in. But when typically in early childhood, we're all in the same season right now. The tough stuff, the hard stuff, the challenging stuff, the stuff like there's no easy way to say that the start of the year is bloody hard.
Leeza Browne (00:16:33) - It is hard yakka, hard work hard, you know, and you've just got to put in those hard yards right at the start of the year. And so what I'm finding even in these past two weeks is to kind of people, we've got the first kind which who's pepped up. It's 2024. It's the start of the year. It's you know, they're energised, they're maintained and they've got that momentum and you know, they're just like two two feet in. They just jump in and they're like, yes. But what happens is they've got to maintain that momentum because you know like myself, it's a very, you know, quick burn. I can be like, yes. And I just want to get it done in that week. However, what we've got to do is get through the entire year. So what we want to do, you've got the other the other people, the, the second kind of person, which is the pepped out person. So they're thinking at the end of last year, this year's going to look different.
Leeza Browne (00:17:28) - This is going to be amazing. It's going to be the um, it's we're going to do things differently. And then the year started and they're already picked out. They've got no energy. They're deflated. They're exhausted already. And we're in January because they're showing up every day now. It is normal. And I just want to preface this because it when things are hard and challenging, it is normal to go home tired. It is normal to go home and cry. Some days it is normal to um when things are hard. Like that is where you are experiencing the maximum amount of growth. So it will be uncomfortable and that is normal. What I wanted to really emphasise was that this is where the maximum growth is going to occur, and this is where that hard work and challenges and perseverance and resilience will really pay off in the long term. These are the seeds that you are planting right now. And the what the the work that you put in right now is for a legacy for the entire year, for the entire two years, three years, four years.
Leeza Browne (00:18:44) - So I want to encourage you during the moments right now, set an intention each week, set a goal or intention each week with your team. Um, and it can be won or it can be true because if your person number one and if you're person number two, so pepped up or pepped out, um, I've got the same advice for you. And the advice is to be able to take one step at a time. So and break it down into small pieces. If you're a visionary like me and perfectionist, although I've been working really hard, so I now call myself a recovering perfectionist. Um, is you have this big vision of where you want it to be, and these big ideals and these big, um, expectations around what you want it to be like. You see these videos on Instagram? Um, I don't, but TikTok and, um, and Facebook come through on your feed and you're like, yes, that's amazing. But what you don't see in those videos, in those little tiny little snippet moments, are the foundation and the and the work that went into creating that.
Leeza Browne (00:19:54) - And there's a saying and I'm not I'm not advocating this by any means, but through my career there's different sayings and teachers. It's like, you know, teachers don't smile till Easter. So in a classroom, this is where you build those that foundation, this is where you build those expectations. This is where you go on repeat like a Nazi person and boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Go on and on and on and on and on about the same things over and over and over and over again until it's actually happening. And it's not overnight. It's not a week. Um, it's literally like the first term or the first month, the first two months. But, um, coming back and just really appreciate getting to know who your children are. Who are your children, who are your team? Who are these as human beings? Not just on the outside developmentally, but on the inside in their hearts and souls? What do they love? What are they bringing to your classroom? What are they bringing to your space? Um, and how can you really help set them up for success for 2024? So when we talk about play, it's really important to preface that with play based learning.
Leeza Browne (00:21:08) - So when we talk about that it's it's important to have expectations and boundaries. It's important to set children up and have a routine and flow of the day. So what is that going to look like. And. What is important is in order to have that flow and routine with a play based learning environment. Your educators in your space, no matter how many you're in there one, two, three, four, five, whatever the size of your team, you have to have structure with your team in order to get a play based learning environment. And remember that that just doesn't happen overnight. What you were doing in December last year, you're getting children move up from a younger space that you you have to start again, and you have to map it out in small little increments. So remember whatever you need to say to yourself. So find some affirmations or some mantras. Um, so step by step, day by day, um, these are whatever. These are the seeds that you're planting right now.
Leeza Browne (00:22:09) - I'm planting a seed. These are the lessons like be embrace them. Really dive in and embrace whatever lesson and intentional teaching opportunities come up. We always say it platinum and, you know, like make every moment count. And it's true. And in these times, I continually remind myself of that. So be fully present in every moment that you have and make every moment count. So I want to leave you will not leave you. But, um, I want to give you a strategy. It's called, um, so, you know, when you're triggered by something, so something triggers you, um, and that's coming from a trauma that you've had previously in your life and the meaning that you've given that trauma. And then your body goes into dysregulation. So fight flight, freeze or fawn you. What we want to do is the opposite of that. We want to find the glimmers. We want to find glimmers, which if whatever we look for, we will find. So if you look for those glimmers and those beautiful, positive things that are happening every day, even if it's a smallest little increment, um, it will make a massive difference and start sharing all of those glimmers with your team.
Leeza Browne (00:23:27) - And the more you focus on those glimmers, the more you will find and recently shared that the more you focus on a glimmer, it will turn into a glow. And you'll have that oxytocin release through your whole body and it will feel amazing. Oh, goodness. Okay, so focus on those glimmers. That's my message to you this year. Work out one intention. So whether you're pepped up or pepped up. Same advice one step at a time. So focus on one intention. What is your intention or goal this week with your team you can have two. So if you're feeling good about your team, you can have one with your team and one with your children. So the start of the year is really just getting to know your group of children, but make sure you set them up for success. Expectations with your team, expectations with your children, and also what else can you do? So, um, we want to make sure we set up rosters, routines, um, flows. We want to make sure that we have everything ready.
Leeza Browne (00:24:35) - Do children really feel respected and seen in your environment? And a lot of services tend to place emphasis on the children this time of the year. But just a little preface and a little notes or side note, just a reminder to make sure that you're placing as much emphasis on your team and your teammates, um, during this time of the year. So even though it's hard sometimes, um, we need to find those beautiful little moments in the day from our team as well, and give them that positive feedback and praise when we tend to go in, um, into that vortex, draw like a, um, a twister or tornado and we're in it. No no no no no no. Um, and we tend to not notice anything outside of that vortex because we're like, oh, I'm just laser focused. I've got this. We need to help the team. We need to help the children get into this flow. But what about your teammates? What about your team? Share those good moments, share those glimmers, share those moments that are challenging and hard.
Leeza Browne (00:25:33) - They might have some really great examples and really great strategies that you can try. My other advice is take accountability for your own needs. So at this time of the year particularly, it's hard for leaders to be able to have the time to identify what your needs are. It will come and it will settle down. But if you're feeling like your needs are not being met, or your identify what that need is is really important and communicate that. Verbalize that to your leaders. Whether it's your room leader, your director, verbalize it to them. It will help them say to them, I feel like I'm not seeing like I feel like you don't seen. I feel like I'm it's not clear what our routine is. I feel like I need, um, to understand more about why we why you want to do it that way, or why are we going to do it this way? Um, I feel like the children need this at this time of the day. Um. Or I feel like I'm not getting enough praise.
Leeza Browne (00:26:40) - And I really need that positive reassurance to from you during the day that I'm doing a really great job. So whatever it is that your need is, verbalise it. So then they know it's clear, it's clarifying, and it'll help them. They'll be like, awesome. Thank you so much for letting me know and take note of that as a leader, and make sure that you make time to do that, um, each day, even if it's just little things throughout the day. And just a reminder to make sure that you are all working together in supporting each other through these really challenging and tough times, like there's no other way to say it, this time of the year is tough. Um, and you just need to really lean on each other and really support each other through these moments. At the end of last year, I had the pleasure of obviously attending the Christmas parties of the services that we manage, um, on an ongoing basis, and I was really struck and I don't know, like, there's not a lot of these moments, but when the when this moment occurred, I really stopped and took notes.
Leeza Browne (00:27:49) - So at the end of the year, we shared, we ran around the table, and I encourage the team to share all of their beautiful. I just said share one moment from the year that is really impacted you or stayed with you, um, or something that you've got from the year. And as we went around the table, um, each person shared some beautiful moments, whether a lot of them were funny moments. Um, but most of them came back to I'm so honored and privileged and grateful to be a part of this team because this year has I've I have grown, they said. I have grown as an educator so much this year and not even just as an educator, but as a human being and as a person. I feel so I feel like I belong here. I feel like this is me, and I feel like every single person here has helped me with my growth and has accepted me for being me every single. Um, time and every single year. And it really touched me.
Leeza Browne (00:28:54) - And, and as we're going around the table like one person and there were tears, like tears of just like gratitude and joy and in those beautiful moments, and you to be in that room and not be touched by as we went around and heard all of these beautiful accounts and beautiful stories, like, you'd have to have no heart. And what touched me and and what I recall from that moment, and I'll never forget it. It was a beautiful. Reminder that in early childhood, we don't just touch the lives of the children that we care for and educate every day. We touch the lives of every single person that we come into contact with. The children, the families, our team, and our team is our most important part of our role. If we are not strong, if we are not supporting each other, if we do not have each other's backs, then we cannot be expected to give all of these every single day. So as we go on every single day, just a reminder of that impact and that positive moments and those glimmers and those and how much of that huge influence you are having on other people's lives around you.
Leeza Browne (00:30:12) - Huge, huge, amazing. And, you know, reminder that at the end of the year and start collecting those glimmers, like, I really like the tradition and or ritual of having a glass jar in your staff room. And each time there's a glimmer or beautiful, precious moment, you write it down on a little post-it note, um, and you just pop it in the jar, pop it in the jar, pop it in the jar throughout the whole year. And then at the end of the year or each quarter, whatever works for you. Read them out. Read them out. Because we need to start being cheerleaders. We need to start cheering each other on. We need to start celebrating all of those beautiful moments that occur each day. And that is how we make each moment count, because whatever we focus on is what we will get. So bring that positivity in and you'll get more positivity flowing out. Now, I wanted to do a little bit different this year. I wanted to do a little bit of a meditation and then a little bit of a pep talk so that you can come back to this episode at any time throughout the year, and it's going to bring you, um, some really beautiful grounding, and it's going to help you to remember where you're at.
Leeza Browne (00:31:24) - It's going to make you be, um, present and mindful in this moment. And I thought it would be beautiful just to do it at the start of the year. And then I'll end the episode with a little bit of a pep talk. Because you know what? We all need a pep talk every now and then. And there's this awesome girl. I'll share some of her posts, um, when they come up. I love it, I love it, um, and she just shares these awesome, like, pep talks. Now you go, girl, you go get it. Like, oh, she's awesome from America. But when she comes up next, I'll share one over. And if you need like a little laugh or and a little pep talk, um, she's your girl. Sorry, but I'll do my best at the end of the episode. But for now, I wanted to proceed with a little bit of a meditation. Um, it's about embracing the new year with clarity and inspiration.
Leeza Browne (00:32:13) - So I want to. If you're driving, please do not proceed into this meditation. Um, if hopefully what I want you to do is begin by finding a comfortable and seated position. Rest your hands gently on your lap and close your eyes if you feel comfortable to do so. Take a deep breath in through your nose. Hold it for a moment. And exhale slowly through your mouth. Release any tension with each breath, allowing yourself to fully arrive in this present moment. If you need to do so. Take two more deep breaths. Hold them in and slowly exhale through your mouth. Boy. It. Now set a positive intention for this meditation. Consider what you would like to let go of and what you wish to welcome in to the New Year. It could be releasing self-doubt. Embracing new opportunities or cultivating motivation and inspiration. We're going to do a body scan. So I want you to bring your awareness to your toes. I want you to wiggle your toes and feel all of those ten toes wiggling.
Leeza Browne (00:34:25) - Notice any sensation you feel in your toes. And with each breath out, release any tension or discomfort. Gradually move your attention up through your feet, legs and torso, releasing and letting go as you go. We want to continue to scan through your body, bringing attention to your shoulders now. Drop your shoulders down low. Feel that tension. Release. Bring your attention to your arms. And your hands. Now to your face and your neck. And let go of any tightness or stress. With each breath. Claude. Now we're going to let go. We're going to visualize any limiting beliefs that you may be holding on to. I want you to imagine these beliefs. As heavy objects. But dark clouds hovering above you. What are these limiting beliefs that you want to let go of that are not going to serve you moving into this new year? Great. With each outbreath, release these objects. Let them go. And I want you to visualize the clouds dissipating. You become leader. You feel your shoulders drop.
Leeza Browne (00:36:56) - You're letting go of that weight. That worry. And you're allowing them to float away. Feel the lightness that comes with letting go. You are creating space for new and empowering beliefs that will serve you moving into this new year. I want you now. To shift your focus to the space above you. I want you to imagine a beautiful, bright, radiant light, a source of inspiration with each of your inhales. Visualize this light descending upon you. Feeling your energy, motivation, and a sense of unlimited potential. Where do you feel the light? In your body? In your mind? In your heart? In your legs. In your feet. In your stomach. Feel that light coming across your whole entire being. I want you to feel the light in every cell of your body, illuminating your mind and your heart. As you feel the light, I want you to repeat these affirmations. You can do so silently or out loud. I am capable of achieving my goals. I release self-doubt and embrace my potential.
Leeza Browne (00:38:54) - I am motivated and inspired to create positive change. Feel the power of these affirmations resonating within you, shaping your mindset for this new year to come. Now think about something you are grateful for. It could be supportive colleague, a valuable lesson learned or an accomplishment. Allow this feeling of gratitude to feel your entire heart. It could be something small. It could be something big. It could be something from five years ago, or something more present and something more recent. Take note of what that moment is for you. I want you to hold on to this gratitude as a reminder of the positive aspects of your journey. I want you to slowly bring your awareness back to this present moment. Feel the support of the chair beneath you and the ground beneath your feet. When you're ready, gently open your eyes. As you go about the New year. Carry with you the clarity, inspiration and motivate meditation you've cultivated in this meditation. You have the power to shape your narrative and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
Leeza Browne (00:41:06) - Thank you for taking this time for yourself. May the New Year bring you growth, success, and fulfilment. All right, we're back. Thank you so much for taking that time for yourself. I'm so, so proud of you all for participating in that meditation. And come back and revisit it at any time that you need to. But for now, I want to leave you with my pep talk. Um, to take you into this new year of 2024. So amazing superhumans.
